In December 2020, the radio group decided to sell off Pocket Casts by September 30, 2021. Around a year later, Pocket Casts became a free app and introduced an optional paid subscription with 10GB of cloud storage for audio content and desktop/web apps. Pocket Casts was previously purchased in 2018 by a group of public radio organizations, including NPR, This American Life, WNYC Studios and WBEZ Chicago. We will explore building deep integrations with and Pocket Casts, making it easier to distribute and listen to podcasts." Automattic said in its blog post, "As part of Automattic, Pocket Casts will continue to provide you with the features needed to enjoy your favorite podcasts (or find something new). The app's co-founders, Russell Ivanovic and Philip Simpson, will continue to lead development. Pocket Casts certainly fits the bill, but there are plenty of other options out there and each caters to a different type of person. Most of that stuff isn’t relevant to the average user, who just wants a solid app for finding, storing, and listening to their favorite podcasts. (If you paid for the old desktop client, you’ll get three years of Plus for free). Pocket Casts Plus costs $1/£1 per month or $10/£10 annually and grants access to custom audio uploads, 10GB of cloud storage, and a desktop client for use on your computer.
Crucially, though, it’s not hiding any of its core features behind the paywall.Įverything available in the previous version of the app is now available for free, with some additional features there for subscribers. Instead, Pocket Casts adds a “Plus” subscription for users wanting to get a little more from the app. But with competing podcast clients available free from Apple, Google, and even Spotify, its developers have decided to ditch the entry fee. Previously the app was a one-time $4/£4 purchase, which was pretty reasonable.
